  • Pole Dance is….

pole ballerinaHey everyone I just though I would get a conversation going. So what is pole dance to you? What has pole dance done for you?

    Exercise

For me pole dance is my main form of exercise and it makes me feel stronger than I have ever felt. When I pole regularly I don’t have to do a lot of other exercise but sometimes I am inspired to cross train for flexibility and of course other aerial arts and dance.

    Friendships

Despite the fact that I teach private lessons in my home based studio I still attend classes at the studio where I took my first class. There is always something new to learn and I have build some of the best friendships I have ever had in those classes.

    Therapist

Pole is what keeps me sane when everything else in my life stinks. I call it my therapy when I have a bad day I can head to my studio turn the music up and work it out. No matter how upset or angry I am after a good pole session I can think more clearly. It has probably saved me from overreacting to plenty of situations. Most of the time a good pole session helps me release the negative emotions that build up so I can once again see the world with some perspective.

    Body Image

One of the things pole has done for me that no other exercise program has ever done is boost my self image even thought I am not at my “goal” weight. First because the more you pole the more muscle you build and as long as I continue to pole I will likely never see 110 pounds again. On any given day I weigh 131-134 pounds and I am wearing the clothes I was wearing the last time I was in the 115-120 pound range. Before pole I would have simply said I was too fat and either become depressed and backed off of exercise because it seemed to not work, or I would have went crazy with cardio.

I can’t tell you my body image is not something I have to work on each day but because of pole I can see myself as a strong woman and I can look in the mirror and say I don’t want to be skinny I want to be fit!

So the second thing it has done for me is change my idea of what healthy looks like and taught me to enjoy the journey. I still have some body fat to lose myself but instead of making ridiculous goals I can’t meet I have started to realize that I am at a healthy weight. I would like a flatter tummy and I would like to feel comfortable in a 2 piece bathing suit but I don’t obsess about it anymore. I have learned to appreciate the fact that I love what pole has done for my legs, my rear end and my arms and some day I will be able to see what those abs look like it will just take some time. I am not overweight and as long as I stay at a healthy weight and try to live a healthy lifestyle there is no rush on losing that extra stubborn belly fat I don’t care for.

What has pole done for you? Comment below and share your story or email your story to carrie@fit-girl.com if you would like me to post it along with any contact information you would like to share.

It is hard for everyone at first but anyone can do it. You just have to start like any other workout by learning the basics building the strength and moving up through the difficulty levels!
